New Leash on Life graduates five dogs Thursday

Five rescued dogs graduated today from their stay at Pender Correctional Facility.

They were there as part of the New Leash on Life program, that uses inmates to help train dogs. Professional dog trainers and Pender County inmates worked together to train the dogs to be obedient and well mannered. Today the five dogs graduated; several met their new owners. The program was a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Donnie Smith an inmate and dog handler said, “For me it’s great it gave me a sense of responsibility and let me actually care for something in a place where there’s not a lot of caring and for the dog it gave him a second chance.”

Three of the five newly trained dogs have been adopted, two others are still looking for a good home.
