Southport Fire Department needs room for expansion

The Southport Fire Department is cramped for space.

The department is getting too big for its small fire station that was built back in the 50’s. The fire trucks are squeezed into the garages and there are few rooms for meetings or conferences.

One of the ladder trucks is kept at the city garage because there’s just no room for it. The chief said they need a bigger space because not only is the department growing, but Brunswick County is too.

Southport Fire Department Chief Gregory Cumbee said, “Well as you can see, the trucks have to be backed in kind of carefully, and you can’t hardly walk between them.”

The town has an architect and a sketch of the proposed new station. The new location will be across Howe Street from Dosher Hospital.
