Gifts to Guilford College total nearly $5 million
GREENSBORO — Students at Guilford College are getting some help to improve their fitness.
The liberal arts school said Monday that it received $2 million to help build a planned student fitness center in Greensboro. The McMichael Family Foundation made the donation, which will cover about a quarter of the center’s $8 million cost.
The News & Record of Greensboro reported that the foundation is connected to the late Dalton McMichael Sr., a longtime resident of nearby Madison who founded Macfield Texturing and Mayo Yarns. One of his sons is a college trustee, and his mother was a 1937 graduate.
The donation was among five large gifts to the Quaker-founded school that total $4.7 million, including an unrestricted $1 million gift from an anonymous donor.
