Prairie Dog stolen from Tregembo Zoo

Some young prairie dogs are without their father because of a bizarre robbery.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office believes two people climbed a fence to break into the Tregembo Zoo Thursday night.

Authorities said they broke the lock on the prairie dog cage and stole one of them. Owner, Robert Tregembo, said Willy is different from his fellow prairie dogs.

“I’m saying they took Willy because he’s tame. He’s the only tame one we had on the whole property, he wouldn’t bite them. The others, if they grabbed them, they would bite them,” said Tregembo.

Deputies found two sets of footprints leading to the prairie dog cage. If you have any information about Willy, you are asked to call the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at 910-798-4200.
