Mountain snow closes schools
ASHEVILLE — Snowfall in western North Carolina has caused closing of schools in a half dozen counties and a two-hour opening delay in at least one more.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Monday that Transylvania, Haywood, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell and Swain counties called off school for the day. Jackson County decided to delay opening school for two hours.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Swain, Graham, Jackson, Macon and Haywood counties until Tuesday. Forecasters said 3 to 6 inches of snow could accumulate with up to 8 inches on tops of mountains.
