Man arrested in NC for capital murder in Texas
WINSTON-SALEM — A Texas fugitive has been arrested in North Carolina on capital murder charges in the 1989 deaths of two men who were shot while sitting at a bar.
Winston-Salem police said 59-year-old Pedro Romero was arrested without incident Tuesday during a traffic stop. He was being held without bond at the Forsyth County Jail.
Fort Worth police and the U.S. Marshal’s Service tracked Romero to North Carolina, though it’s unclear how long he had been in the state.
Authorities told the Winston-Salem Journal that Romero fled to Mexico after shooting Juan Pablo Chavez and Isidro Carbajal inside the bar he ran with his brother. Investigators said the men had gotten into an argument before the shooting.
Fort Worth police Detective Manny Reyes said witnesses recently came forward.
