Feds in NC euthanized stranded newborn right whale
AVON, N.C. — Officials on the North Carolina coast say they’ve euthanized a newborn right whale after it was stranded on an Outer Banks beach.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said Wednesday the baby whale was discovered on the beach near the village of Avon on Hatteras Island.
Seashore biology technician Michelle Bogardus told The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., the baby whale was in poor condition and couldn’t survive without its mother. She said the
baby whale was about 15-feet long.
North Atlantic right whales are an endangered species, and officials believe there are only about 350 to 400 left in existence.
