Jonkunnu Celebration at Bellamy Mansion
Traditional African-American music and folk dancers took over the streets around the Bellamy Mansion on Saturday.
The second annual Jonkunnu Celebration captured the attention of people from all over.
It’s a Christmas celebration dating back to the 1840’s when African-American slaves were allowed to celebrate the Christmas holiday with their master and his family.
Frances Burney-Matthews explained, “It’s really a part of our heritage that is really not well known, and by coming and participating you will come to understand the African-American history or culture better.”
Part of the celebration included dancing, African drum beats, and mask making.
