Woodturners make ornaments for a good cause

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Local woodturners spent the day making wooden ornaments to raise money for “Kids Making It” a local charitable organization.

The Wilmington Area Woodturners Association members sponsored the event at the Lowe’s Home Improvement in Porters Neck. For a small donation, children got a chance to pick out an ornament and paint it at the store.

“Their members have been busy making holiday ornaments for the past  two or three months and we have kids out here today who are painting those ornaments, making donations to raise money for Kids Making It,” said Kid Making It Director Jimmy Pierce.

Byron Rosbrugh with the Wilmington Area Woodturners Association said they thought it was important to help a community group that’s making a difference.

“They are probably the best place for people to put their charity money in town because it does so much good for the kids that really need the help,” said Rosbrugh.

Kids Making It provides young people an opportunity to learn how things are made, how they are marketed, and how to profit from creativity and work invested. KMI is totally dependent upon contributions from the community and grants from numerous businesses and companies.

The organization will hold two more holiday events next weekend to sell the ornaments. Saturday morning (November 12) they’re holding a pancake breakfast at Trinity United Methodist Church. Sunday, Yelp will hold an event for the organization at Ironclad Brewery from 2-5 p.m.

Additional information is available on the KMI webpage.
