Pat Hingle dies at the age of 84

Carolina Beach resident and veteran television, stage and silver screen actor, Pat Hingle died over the weekend. A family spokeswoman said Hingle died at his home Saturday night. Hingle’s wife, Julie, was with him.

Hingle lived in Carolina Beach for more than 15 years, moving here after shooting the film Maximum Overdrive in 1986.

Pat Hingle may be best known for his role as Commissioner Gordon from the Batman movies. For the last several years, he battled blood cancer. Two months ago, Hingle was honored with a star on the Wilmington Walk of Fame.

“It’s a very great honor, and you know they’ve got the Hollywood Walk of Fame but you know, this one is much nicer,” said Hingle.

Hingle’s career in movies and television spanned six decades. Before that, he was a star on Broadway, including the original cast of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Hingle earned a Tony nomination for 1958’s The Dark at the Top of the Stairs.

Pat Hingle was 84.
