Street signs keeping drivers aware of DWI costs

When you put a dollar sign in front of something, you are sure to get a reaction.

The area group called Safe Streets is putting up signs all across town, telling everyone how much it costs if you get a DWI.

It is about $10,000 if you count a lawyer, court fees, and insurance increases. The group makes teens aware of the dangers of drinking and driving through real life simulations.

Wilmington police officer, Joe Fitzgerald said “A lot of the public is unaware of the large financial cost that is associated with an impaired driving conviction. The insurance points, the insurance nearly quadruples. A lot of people are unaware of it, and only think about the possible criminal side of it.”

The director of the organization said since he put up the signs, he has received a lot of positive feedback.
