Preparing for the frigid temperature coming our way

Frigid temperatures are coming. Are you prepared for the cold blast headed this way?

Cold weather can be dangerous if you’re not prepared. The winter blast up north is headed to our area. You have one day to get ready for the cold snap.

Forecasters predict Friday’s low temperatures will be in the teens. That is near our record of 10 degrees set back in 1994.

“If it could be a little more consistent, we could deal with it better. When we got warm and then we got cold it can cause you to get sick easier,” said Wilmington’s Leonard Peters.

Cold weather can also be dangerous. In 2005, sixteen percent of home fires were caused by not using heating equipment properly. Firefighters say, if you use space heaters or kerosene heaters keep an eye on them, especially near children and animals. They also suggest re-fueling kerosene heaters outside to prevent a spill or potential fire.

Mechanics say having your car checked for its freezing point is a good idea. A simple coolant test and acid test will show if your car can handle cold temperatures. Bad coolant, or acid build up, can cause rusting and damage to the engine.

“You want to take precautious at home with your water and your pets,” said Tammy Skipper of Leland.

Experts suggest leaving your faucet on a slow drop to prevent pipes from freezing. As for pets, either bring them inside or make sure they have a warm blanket and shelter outside.

Emily McNamara plans to bring her two dogs inside. “The puppies can be inside with us by the fire.”

Firefighters also suggest not using the oven to heat your home; it can also lead to a potential fire.
