Yes, it’s cold in NC, but not record-breaking

RALEIGH — Everyone is struggling in the low temperatures across North Carolina, but meteorologists say no records were broken despite the chill.

The National Weather Service said the temperature at Asheville was 5 degrees Friday morning, but the record there was minus-1, set in 1994.

Across the state at Raleigh-Durham International Airport the reading was 15 degrees, well short of the record 3 degrees set in 1994.

The cold really affects workers like firefighters. Asheville division chief Tommy Brooks told the Asheville Citizen-Times that firefighters have to be rotated when battling a blaze because they get wet and can easily become chilled.
