Just enough snow to cancel school for some on Wednesday

Whiteville wasn’t too white today, but white enough.

A light dusting of snow was enough to close Whiteville and Columbus County schools.

Columbus County started on a two-hour delay and then closed.

Whiteville city schools had a routine start, with school buses in route. They picked up students, brought them to school, and then decided to close for the day.

City School Superintendent Randy Shaver said it’s never an easy call, but its better to be safe than sorry. “It is a superintendents nightmare to have the snow start after the buses have started their morning runs. We decided it was best to bring them to schools and unfortunately during that 40 minute period the snow got really thick and really heavy, it really didn’t impact the roads very much but we thought it might.”

Today’s snow day will have to be made up either sometime in April, during Easter break, or on Memorial Day. The school board will decide tomorrow.
