Port City residents hope for change in 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the ball drops on the New Year many say that 2013 isn’t the only thing they hope to say goodbye to.

“On the national level I would like to see more access to opportunity and more potential for social mobility in the middle class,” said Jacob Vares.

“I would like to see minimum wage go up because this state is one of the most expensive in this country,” said Avery Herring.

But many say change isn’t only needed on the national level, but on the local level as well.

After hundreds of shots were fired in the streets of Wilmington many are calling for peace in 2014.

“I would like to see more organizations that get involved with the youth,” said Kim Williams. “We need to educate them on education, discipline, and how to be a better person and grow into vibrant young men and women.”

To accomplish that goal Geoffrey Goldston says that people need to stop pointing the finger at everyone else, and take ownership of their lives, which is why he is making a change on a personal level.

“I start school January 6,” said Geoffrey Goldston. “I’m 35 years old, and I’m a construction worker, and I’m trying to better my life and make more money. I’m going to school for welding so hopefully I’ll do a lot better than that.”
