Details of the retirement packages offered to New Hanover County employees

New Hanover County Sheriff, Sid Causey, has voluntarily retired to help the county with a huge budget shortfall. Some people are wondering, who’s next?

Less than 20 percent of the 150 county employees eligible for early retirement have volunteered.

Here is the package the county is offering voluntary retirees:

Employees who have 30 plus years would get about three months pay.

Employees with more than 25 years but fewer than thirty, get about a month’s pay and a discount on their health insurance.

20 to 25 year employees get 20 days paid and the health insurance discount.

The county will not pay out accrued sick time, but will pay out for unused vacation time.

The deadline for county employees to voluntarily retire is Friday by 7:00 p.m.
