Durham groups want NC sculpture lit year-round
DURHAM — Public art advocates say a light sculpture outside the Durham Performing Arts Center should be lit every night, but the donor says both and he and artist intended that it
be lit only for theater events.
The sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume (JOW’-mah) Plensa is titled “Sleep No More.” The Herald-Sun of Durham reported Thursday that the Cultural Master Plan Advisory Board and the
Public Art Task Force have recommended that it be lit from dusk until 2 a.m. each day.
Jim Goodman is president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, which donated the sculpture. He says he and Plensa meant for the sculpture to be lit only when the theater is operating.
The head of the board and the task force, Josh Parker, says he believes it’s a great piece of public art and that as many people as possible should have access to it.
