Train depot back on track in Whiteville

History and the present come alive at the train depot nestled in downtown Whiteville.

Built in 1903, it was the central hub of the city, a place where our soldiers went off to war and commerce like tobacco and grapes were shipped out.

Thirty years ago, however, it fell in to disrepair. It was abandoned and it was white washed covered with graffiti, windows broken, it was a major detriment to downtown and to Whiteville.

Through a $750,000 federal grant and community fundraising that matched that amount, it has been restored to its old glory.

Original flooring, beaming and brick walls, the community has been all aboard on the project.

The restoration was money well spent. The depot has been the site of two presidential visits. Bill Clinton came in 2000, and again last April, campaigning for Hillary.

More frequently, it’s used for community theater, festivals and art shows. There’s still more on the horizon for the depot. Its old cement platform will be transformed in to an outdoor event area with a stage and a park.

Whiteville residents and visitors won’t have to wait long for it; the outdoor portion of the project will begin in about six to eight weeks.
