Investigators looking for man posing as trooper near Sneads Ferry
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Investigators in Onslow County are looking for a man who reportedly is conducting illegal traffic stops in the Sneads Ferry area.
The NC Highway Patrol and Onslow County Sheriff’s Office say based on reports they’ve received the suspect is described as a tall white male in his late 20s or early 30s and drives a dark Dodge Charger with a large antenna on top. The vehicle has flashing blue lights in the front grille. The man was reported wearing a ball cap type hat with a NC Highway Patrol patch and a black jacket. So far the man has only stopped female drivers, but authorities warn ALL drivers to be cautious.
Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller offers a couple of safety tips if you are stopped by an unmarked car:
* In the event you are stopped by an unmarked car and it appears suspicious, you should call 911. In the recent reports, the car has been a dark, possibly black, Dodge Charger with an antenna.
* If someone tries to stop you, continue driving until you are in a well-lit area such as a gas station or an open business.
A TRUE law-enforcement officer will not have a problem with someone calling 911 to confirm that they are legitimate. While the Sheriff’s Office does have dark colored Chargers, these vehicles will have numerous blue lights and deputies will be in uniform and will provide a Sheriff’s badge and identification upon his initial approach.
Anyone with information about this white male driving an unmarked dark Dodge Charger is asked to contact Onslow County Sheriff’s office at (910) 455-3113 or Crime Stoppers at (910) 938-3273. Remember that you can remain completely anonymous, but you may be entitled to a reward of up to $2,500 if you provide information that aids in the apprehension of this man.
