NC lake boat access area remains closed

RALEIGH — State officials say a boating access area at Lake James State Park will remain closed because of work on the dam spillway by Duke Energy Corp.

The state Division of Parks and Recreation said Thursday the closure applies to the Hidden Cove boat access area. The division also said the work means water levels in the park’s swimming area will be lower by about 3 feet.

Contractors have used the boat access area as a staging area for heavy equipment.

Park Superintendent Sean McElhone said the boat area will be closed for safety, but that it will be reopened as soon as possible.

The state said Duke Energy expects to complete the spillway project by July 1.

The Canal Bridge boat access area will remain open.
