Major David Smithey wants consideration for sheriff

A familiar face from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office wants the top job when Sheriff Sid Causey retires this summer.

Thursday afternoon, retired Major David Smithey plans to announce he wants to be considered by the Democratic Party to be Causey’s replacement.

Causey opted to take an early retirement package from the county, and will step down July 1st. Recently, Sheriff Causey recommended Chief Deputy Ed McMahon take his place.
