Sun tanning seal caught on video near Topsail Island

LEA ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A couple Topsail High School students caught a rare look at a seal on the beach at Lea Island.

We haven’t confirmed what kind of seal he/she is, but we do know the lil’ guy is very cute!

One of the student’s mothers, Chandra Covil, sent us the pictures, video, and this note:

“These two Topsail High School students, Ryan Covil and Gianni Buffalino, had early release today from school and spent the afternoon boating and on Lea Island enjoying the warm weather and sunshine, when they came across a Northern Fur Seal basking in the sun amongst the white sand dunes on the ocean side of the island around 2:28 PM today. Around 3:11pm they made an amazing video of this sea creature heading back into the ocean. What an exciting and amazing find to see such a beautiful and amazing animal laying there on the beach and then waddling back into the ocean. Lea Island is located south of Topsail Island and north of Figure 8 Island. “
