League of Women Voters hosts breakfast

Local residents had the chance to talk to their state and national representatives at a breakfast on the campus of UNCW on Monday.

This is the third year the League of Women Voters have sponsored the event.

Hundreds of people came out to ask their congressmen and women questions.

Hot topics included film incentives, local beach conditions, and alternative energy research.

Organizers said the meeting is true democracy at work. “People feel that their representatives are off somewhere in Raleigh or Washington and we want them to understand that this is part of democracy, that you have the right to speak to your representative and they are accessible,” said Audrey Albrech, a member of the League of Women Voters.

The issues the League of Women Voters were most interested in were ensuring fair elections and monitoring campaign funds.

People seemed especially interested to ask questions about the state of our local economy.
