NC Medical Board ranked among most improved in US

RALEIGH — A consumer group says North Carolina’s medical regulators are among the most improved in the nation for protecting patients against unethical doctors or those whose care is below standards.

The News & Observer reported Tuesday that the group Public Citizen ranked the North Carolina Medical Board 14th this year for the years 2006-2008. The board was ranked 41st in the period from 2001-2003.

The medical board licenses doctors and disciplines them.

North Carolina’s board had been criticized for not taking strong actions against troubled physicians and in 2006 it hired more investigators and said it would be more aggressive.
