American Express to close NC travel office
HIGH POINT, N.C. — American Express says it will close a business travel office in North Carolina and lay off about 100 employees.
The High Point Enterprise reported Tuesday that a spokesman said the move is one of several staff reductions at travel offices around the nation. The High Point office opened in 2005.
American Express spokesman Stephen Feeley said Monday the layoffs and closing were driven by a continued decline in the economy because people are spending less on travel.
Feeley said a handful of people will continue working at a credit card service center in Greensboro.
When the travel office was announced, the company said it expected to employ 300 people, but Feeley said the company didn’t meet that goal.
Employees will be paid through July 3.
