Census report shows minorities gaining in NC

RALEIGH — A census report shows that North Carolina’s minority population is increasing steadily.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that the census report shows minorities make up a third of the state’s population. That number is mostly blacks, Hispanics and Asians.

North Carolina’s Hispanic population grew by 79 percent between 2000 and 2008 and the number of Asians grew by 48 percent. The state’s black population grew by about 13 percent and the white population grew about 9 percent.

North Carolina reflects the nation’s population, which is about 34 percent minority.
