What’s Happening: Memorial Day events

If you are shopping in southern Brunswick County Saturday and see veterans handing out poppies, feel free to accept one. Veterans are handing out the flowers to get donations to help fellow veterans who are in need.

On Monday, Memorial Day events are spread throughout the area. At 11:00 a.m., a ceremony to honor fallen soldiers will take place at the Wilmington National Cemetery on Market Street in Wilmington.

Also at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, there is a Memorial Day remembrance in Brunswick County. It is at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7288 in Calabash. It is located on Carter Drive.

Later that afternoon, ceremonies return to Wilmington. American Legion Post 10 will hold a Memorial Day service at Hugh MacRae Park at 3:00 p.m.

Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at the Battleship North Carolina. There will be a military guest speaker, Color Guard, military band and a 21-gun salute. The program begins at 5:00 p.m. on the fantail of the battleship.

More than 170 veterans are buried in the Burgaw Town Cemetery. So on Monday, there will be a veteran’s memorial dedication. The dedication ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m.
