NC trooper shoots man after traffic stop

DURHAM — North Carolina officials are investigating a Memorial Day shooting by one of its troopers in Durham County.

Patrol spokesman Capt. Everett Clendenin said Trooper R.R. Clay has stopped a vehicle Monday afternoon for a minor traffic violation. The 19-year-old driver couldn’t produce identification and got into a fight with the trooper when told he would be arrested.

Clendenin says Clay fired his weapon and the injury isn’t believed to be life-threatening.

The incident is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.
