Celebrating the waters that connect us all

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher celebrated World Oceans Day Sunday .

The aquarium had extra education stations allowing kids to learn about the ocean hands on.
One table allowed kids to do a fake dissection. Kids pulled items out of the “stomach” of a marine creature and guessed the animal they were exploring.

Craft tables emphasizing the importance of conservation offered kids the chance to decorate their own light switch plate, reminding them to turn off the lights.

Education program specialist Ruth Gourley says living in the wilmington area means seeing the effects we have on the ocean immediately.

“Even if you don’t live on Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach or Kure Beach, … What you’re doing, what you’re driving what your purchasing impact the ocean,” Gourley said. “So it’s really important to not only understand our impacts, but also have a day that celebrates the ocean.”

The Wilmington Zoo also partnered with the aquarium teaching kids about polar bears.
