Bald Head residents vote on beach renourishment

It will come down to a vote from the residents of Bald Head Island to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to beach renourishment.

The 17-million dollar project would replace sand on the south and west ends of the island.

Most of the 278 residents who live on the island year round were allowed to vote.

If the beach restoration passes, property tax rates could go up by 19 cents per $100 of valuation or more.

Some residents feel they have no choice. “It’s major problems if we don’t save it, we would have to build new roads to gain access and this is affecting one of our main roads on the island that everybody has to use and we have got to keep it if we can. If we don’t we are going to lose it plus a lot more,” said Wayne Lambert.

The unofficial votes will be tallied by Tuesday night.
