2 killed in plane crash near western NC airport

PENROSE, N.C. — Two men have died after their single-engine airplane crashed a few miles from an airport in western North Carolina.

Multiple media outlets reported the plane came down near the Transylvania County Airport near Brevard late Monday afternoon.

Airport owner Ken Allison says the pilot was maneuvering to land the plane in overcast weather. Transylvania County emergency services director Kevin Shook says the plane appeared to be trying to turn when it crashed on a dirt road.

The victims’ names have not been released. Federal officials were investigating.
