Alledged drug dealer off streets after Brunswick County teacher arrested

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department say they’ve taken a major drug dealer off the streets. Detectives say he dealt prescription drugs to a Brunswick County kindergarten teacher.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputies say they found the teacher in possession of Fentanyl, an extremely powerful opiate.

Candice Smith is a kindergarten teacher at Virginia Williamson Elementary in Brunswick County.

She was arrested Monday night after detectives say she bought and used Fentanyl from alleged drug dealer, Bryan Knight.

“He was taking the medications he was prescribed legally by a doctor, and ultimately diverting them for profit,” said a Brunswick County Vice detective.

According to vice narcotic officers, the effect of one patch of Fentanyl is equal to ten bags of heroin. “Because inherently these drugs are getting in the hands of people, they’re dying, over-dosing, and getting in the hands of kids. These drugs aren’t meant to be taken recreationally.”

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department says an incident currently under investigation led them to find out Smith was using highly potent opiates.

In an interview with detectives, we’re told she revealed information about how she got the drugs. That leads to the arrest of Bryan Knight who is now charged with 14 counts of possession with intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance.

Detectives say the fact Smith is a kindergarten teacher will not affect the investigation. “It reinforces my point that whoever you are, if you break these laws you will be arrested.”

Smith has been suspended from her position with Brunswick County schools while the investigation continues.
