Good summer reads

The lazy days of summer are often spent lounging on the beach with a book. From local authors to timeless classics, there are plenty of good reads to keep you entertained without leaving your beach chair.

From the Time Traveler’s Wife to the Twilight series, there are plenty of best sellers that will keep you engrossed these summer days, but when it comes to requests, Edward Cullen might face some stiff competition from Mr. Darcy.

“Jane Austen is still one of the very favorites,” said Brooks Preik of Two Sisters Bookery.

A recent survey of good summer reads by the NC Dept. of Cultural Resources yielded a varied reading list.

Several classics made the pick. “I think people feel that they’ve missed something and they really have so they like to get back to something that has a history and once they’ve find how wonderful these stories are can’t get enough of them, just keep coming back for more,” Preik said.

The classics never go out of style, but Two Sisters Bookery also sells a lot of books by authors from our area or books that are written about our area.

Preik recommends works by local author Clyde Edgerton and books from South Carolina authors Pat Conroy and Mary Alice Monroe.

If you want to stick closer to home, books on the Civil War are also top sellers, giving you plenty to chose from when it’s time to pack that beach bag.

If local stories or authors interest you, every Friday on Good Morning Carolina, we interview a North Carolina author about their latest work during our book corner segment.
