Brunswick Board of Elections dismisses protest filed in Sandy Creek mayoral race

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A protest filed against the projected winner of the Sandy Creek Mayor’s race has been dismissed by the Brunswick County Board of Elections.
The board met Monday morning to decide whether to proceed with the protest.
According to the application filed with the Board of Elections, Nathan Youngs alleges Mayor-elect Mel Miller did not disclose her felony records when she filed for office.
Miller was convicted of worthless check charges in 2000 and charges related to mishandling of funds for her own use in 1998.
According to Board of Elections Director Sara Lavere, Miller did not disclose the charges when she filed for office, but those charges did not restrict Miller from running for office, or change the outcome of the election.
Miller was declared winner of the November 7 election following vote canvassing on November 17.
Lavere says the certificate of election for Mel Miller will not be issued for five days, and that Youngs can appeal the decision reached by the board.
