Ocean Isle Beach commissioners seat takes surprising turn

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Another twist in the race to fill the third seat on Ocean Isle Beach Commissioners. David Green basically quit- before he started.
Green resigned from that seat during the swearing in ceremony on Tuesday. Stephen Turner was sworn in instead.
Green was selected to fill the third commissioner seat when his name was drawn from a hat during the November 28th Brunswick Board of Elections meeting. The Board did the draw to decide the winner of a tie race, which was done in accordance with North Carolina GS 163-292.
Green and Stephen Turner each had 219 votes following a canvass done on the November 7th election.
According to Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith, Green tried to withdraw from the commissioner race prior to the November 7th election, but missed the deadline to withdraw. His name remained on the ballot, he ended up being in a tie with Turner.
