HISTORIC HOME TOUR: McClammy-Powell House

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With its red brick, wrap-around porch and Corinthian columns, the McClammy-Powell house almost demands your attention. It definitely will when you see it on the Azalea Festival Home Tour.

The Neo-Classical Revival at 423 South Front Street was built in 1914. One of the homeowners, Gregg Thomas, said it has only had four owners in its 102-year-old history, and has never been turned into apartments.

Inside you’ll see ornate details everywhere, and outside you’ll enjoy a spacious backyard.

Thomas said he’s happy to be on the tour because a house like this needs to be shared.

“You know, this house, it will be passed on to someone else after I’m gone, but I think you have a love for these houses, and just, you want to live in them and keep them up for the next generation of people to enjoy,” Thomas said.

Thomas added that the home was built for $5,000. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that equals about $118,000 now.

The Azalea Festival Home Tour runs Saturday and Sunday.
