Coyotes worry some visitors to forest near UNC
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Wile E. Coyote always led to laughs when he ran into the Roadrunner or Bugs Bunny.
But the News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that people at the Carolina North forest trail near the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill aren’t laughing at their encounters with real coyotes.
The school has posted signs warning that that more coyotes are being seen. Officials say people should be careful, especially if they have unleashed dogs.
The forest’s Web site says coyotes vigorously defend their dens and dogs will be at a disadvantage in any confrontation.
Tommy Galloway of Chapel Hill says he decided to turn around when he came across a coyote recently. He says he had never seen coyotes in the forest until earlier this year.
Officials say it’s hard to get a count on the number of coyotes in the area.
