State trooper resigns after arrest on DWI charge in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper has resigned after being arrested this week with DWI in Brunswick County.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office arrested William Bryan Thompson around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to documents, for allegedly having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit of .08.

A NC Department of Public Safety spokeswoman tells WWAY the Highway Patrol began an internal investigation as soon as it learned of Thompson’s arrest. She says Thompson, who was put on “investigatory placement,” quit his job Thursday.

Thompson, a 19-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, was assigned to Troop B, District 9 Motor Carrier Enforcement office located in Fayetteville.
