Wilmington police and firefighters battle on the field

There are certain perks that come with the job of being a Wilmington police officer. Normally softball practice does not come to mind, but that was the name of the game Friday evening as the police department softball team prepares for their upcoming contest against the Wilmington Fire Department.

“I think everyone here is ready to play,” said Billy Young of the Wilmington Police Department. When asked if he was confident of a police department victory, Smith said, “Yes, always. Against the fire department? Yes!”

The Wilmington Fire Department is taking this game seriously as well. In fact, they have already held six practices. “I’m a captain in the training division. They don’t listen to me in the training. What makes you think they’ll listen to me on the ball field,” asked Captain Tim Smith.

Monday’s game will take place at Legion Stadium at 6:30 p.m. It will be a prelude to the Coastal Plains League All-Star Home Run Derby. The home run contest will start at 8:00 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Wilmington Police Memorial Fund and the family of National Guard Sergeant Ed Kramer, the former Wilmington firefighter killed in Iraq last month.
