NC school board to get details of rehiring plan

CHARLOTTE — The superintendent of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools is expected to provide details of plans to rehire teachers and other laid-off employees to the school board.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Superintendent Peter Gorman has said the state tax increases will let him rehire “a substantial number” of the 665 teachers laid off earlier this summer. He’s expected to provide details of a rehiring plan to the board Tuesday.

As of the end of June, the school system had laid off almost 1,200 people from a work force of more than 19,000. Some have been rehired already as vacancies occurred.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools are scheduled to open Aug. 25.
