Hittin’ the beach with trash bags

An army of helping hands flocked to Wrightsville Beach Sunday equipped with garbage bags, and ready to give back.

It was all part of the Pier to Pier clean-up. The event was organized to raise awareness on beach beautification. Supporters gathered at Crystal Pier and scanned the sand for garbage all the way to Johnnie Mercer’s Pier.

Organizer Greg Sager said it is important to keep the beach looking great all the time.

“Most of us live here, and the people who come out of town and in to visit, we want to make sure that its beautiful year round,” Sager said. “This is a project that we felt was very very worthy and that’s the reason why Southern Islander is supporting it 150 percent.”

Organizers say the inaugural event was a success. They hope to continue it for years to come.
