NC mental hospitals to lose staff in budget cuts
RALEIGH, N.C. — Seventy-five employees at North Carolina mental hospitals and homes for the developmentally disabled will lose their jobs as a result of state budget cuts earlier this month.
Nearly 300 vacant positions also will be eliminated.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro will be especially hard hit with cuts of 31 current employee jobs and the elimination of nearly 100 vacant positions. The hospital was cited by federal regulators last year after a neglected patient died.
The state budget signed by Gov. Beverly Perdue slashed $155 million from the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services. Staff cuts at the
state’s 14 hospitals and residential treatment centers account for nearly $13 million of the total budget cut.
