Fuel tank falls off helicopter and falls into ocean in Surf City

Surf City officials are searching for remnants of a fuel tank that fell in the ocean.

It happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon near the 1700 block of North Shore Drive.

Surf City fire officials say a fuel tank fell off a helicopter and into the ocean. They suspect the tank had between one to two hundred gallons of fuel in it.

So far they say it’s safe to swim there.

Swimmers who spot anything unusual should call 911.
