NC baby beats ambulance, so 6-year-old helps birth
FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A North Carolina 6-year-old said she was acting like a big girl as she helped her mother deliver a baby at home.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that Briana Johnson of Fuquay-Varina ( Few-KWAY Vuh-REE-nah) gave birth on her bedroom floor with only help from her young daughter Diyana as an ambulance raced to the scene.
Johnson said she felt contractions early Wednesday. Her water broke as she stepped out of bed, so she called her father and then an ambulance.
The 25-year-old nurse knew help would arrive too late, so she told her first-grade daughter to fetch towels and then open the door for the rescue squad.
Diyana says she controlled an impulse to cry while watching her mother in pain as five-pound Madisyn was born.
