2 NC deputies wounded after chase; suspect killed

PITTSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina officials have released the name of the suspect killed in a shootout that wounded two sheriff’s deputies following a car chase.

Chatham County Sheriff’s Maj. Gary Blankenship says 35-year-old David Scott Herring of Bear Creek was killed in the shooting Thursday afternoon.

Spokeswoman Debra Henzey says the chase began at the Moore County line and ended in Siler City, approximately 20 miles away and around 50 miles west of Raleigh.

Henzey says the suspect fired on the deputies, hitting both in the legs. The deputies returned fire and killed the suspect. A second person in the vehicle was not charged.

Capt. Roy Allen and Sgt. Chris Perry were in good condition at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
