Truck drags NC officer; police search for driver

ZEBULON, N.C. — Three people have been arrested and police are searching for a driver after a North Carolina police officer was dragged by a truck that then ran over him.

Police told WRAL-TV that the Zebulon police officer may have suffered a broken leg.

Police say the officer responded about 2 a.m. Friday to a call about people stealing propane tanks at a gas station. When police saw the truck at another gas station, an officer in training went to the passenger’s side and stood in the truck doorway.

Police say the officer was trapped when the driver put the truck in reverse, and the passenger tried to shut the door. The officer was dragged about 15 to 20 feet.

Police Chief Tim Hayworth says when the officer got free, the vehicle ran over him.
