Local boxing legend Sherriedale Morgan passes away at 75

A local boxing legend passed away at New Hanover County Regional Medical Center Thursday afternoon.

Sherriedale Morgan was champion of the 1955 Pan-American Games for the US Army. Morgan later coached the Wilmington Boxing Program. Many of his students went on to pro careers in the ring including heavyweight Donnell Holmes, native of Pender County. Holmes said Morgan was more than just a coach.

“He didn’t have any superstars, he taught us about life itself, boxing was just the foundation that brought us all together. But he was like a father figure to everyone that he had,” Holmes said.

The boxing and physical fitness center on 10th Street in Wilmington was named after Morgan. There people can learn the principals of fitness and boxing Sherriedale used in his own life.

Morgan was 75 years old.
