Six children taken to hospital after daycare bus involved in crash
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Six children were taken to the hospital after their daycare bus was involved in an accident this morning. A Childcare Network bus was involved in the crash with two other vehicles near the intersection of Blue Clay Road and N. Kerr Ave.
The crash was reported at 8:05 a.m. after Highway Patrol says the driver of the Childcare Network school bus, Megan Mercia, 31, of Wilmington, tried to make a left turn from Kerr onto Blue Clay.
Tpr. B.R. Phillips said six children between the ages of 3 and 5 were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Three of the children said they were hurt, but all the children on the bus were brought to New Hanover Regional Medical Center Emergency Department in Scotts Hill, where they met up with their families. Mercia was also taken to the hospital after complaining of injuries.
Highway Patrol cited Mercia for failure to yield, Phillips said. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, New Hanover County Fire and an ambulance were all on scene. The road was not closed and traffic was moving relatively normally throughout the clean-up.
