NHCS take to Twitter for dress code feedback, students sound off

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After proposing the dress code change a few weeks ago, New Hanover County School officials took to twitter.

New Hanover County Schools are looking at adding skinny jeans, leggings and other excessively tight clothing to the list of clothes students can’t wear. But the jeans or leggings could be covered by a top or dress.

The school system took to Twitter to see what parents and students thought.

Some people on Twitter said they were against the policy change for many reasons. They said it would cost too much to buy new clothes, girls would bear the brunt of the policy and stores don’t sell other types of pants.

Those thoughts were shared by some Laney High School students hanging out at the mall Friday night.

“I’ve never heard of a situation where a boy didn’t do good on school work because a girl’s shoulder was revealing,” said Emily Mikoloski. “It’s ridiculous.”

“They may not be able to go buy new jeans or new attire for the new dress code so that might be a money situation,” said Dion Hugley.

“I think New Hanover County Schools should keep their dress code as is,” said Chris Duncan.

“If you go to a regular women’s store they aren’t going to have baggy jeans or cargos or khakis because they don’t sell that,” said Lydia Poore. “There’s so many other problems in our school besides dress code, we can’t have text books for every student, there’s online bullying like during school hours, there’s fights in the hall ways, there’s gangs.”

New Hanover County Schools said it will take into consideration the Twitter comments before making a decision on the policy.
