Brunswick 4H celebrates 100 years

Brunswick County 4H members, volunteers and alumni celebrated the 100th birthday of 4H Monday night. It was not 4H without a cake decorating contest, but that was not the only food oriented event.

“We have our favorite food fair. Basically children prepared different dishes and prepared a place setting. The judges went through asking them the nutritional benefits, how they made it and so forth,” said Brunswick County 4H agent Blair Green.

4H started back in 1909 mainly as an agricultural club to help boys grow corn. Through the years it has changed quite a bit, with the addition of girls, a focus on agriculture, and with more programs geared toward urban youth.

Brunswick 4H also sealed a time capsule that they will re-open in 25 years.
